Do you need a permit for a fence in Seattle?

In Seattle, typical backyard fences up to 6 feet are generally allowed without a building permit; taller fences, fences on retaining walls and front-yard fences have additional height rules. Other cities have their own rules — check with your city or ask your contractor to confirm before building.

Repair or replace?

  • Usually a repair: 1–3 damaged posts or panels, a sagging gate, a single cracked vinyl panel.
  • Usually a replacement: widespread rot, fences older than 15–20 years, most posts leaning.
